On October 31, I had the pleasure of interviewing Brian Mukundi, a third-year Journalism and Mass Communication student at Chuka University, who is already making waves in the world of radio and entertainment. Mukundi hosts two shows on Chuka University Radio: Kazi Mseto, which airs Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a Sunday afternoon country music show from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Besides his work as a radio host, he is a voiceover artist, business news reporter, and MC.
Balancing Academics and Broadcasting
Mukundi juggles his studies with his passion for radio, an experience he describes as rewarding. "I’m in my third year pursuing a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication," he said. “It requires good time management, but I find it manageable with the right balance.”
The Evolution of Kazi Mseto
Kazi Mseto, Mukundi's weekday show, is centered on “hustles, educational topics, talents, agriculture, and politics,” he explained. The show has garnered a loyal audience, with Mukundi’s voice and personality becoming a staple on campus airwaves.
Challenges and Growth on Air
Being on the radio has transformed Mukundi’s personality, he admits. "I used to be a bit reserved, but hosting a show has built my confidence. However, it also comes with increased expectations from fans, which can be challenging," he reflected. “Navigating sensitive topics, like LGBTQIA issues and abortion, can be tricky because listeners have high expectations of me. Staying authentic while respecting societal norms is something I continually strive to balance.”
Mukundi fondly recalled his early days on-air with co-host Mama Nana, reminiscing about the high online engagement they received. “Those were some of my favorite days,” he added.
A Passion for Emceeing
Mukundi’s talents extend beyond radio; he began as an MC and continues to embrace the role, which he finds more personal and interactive. “As an MC, I can connect directly with my audience, which is something I enjoy," he explained. However, the job comes with its own set of challenges, from customer dissatisfaction to occasional technical difficulties, which he has learned to handle with resilience.
“One of my favorite memories as an MC was during a Mwendento FM roadshow. The crowd was so hyped; it felt surreal," he said, smiling. "Another was a Cultural Day event hosted by Chuka University during my second year.”
Political Views and Ambitions
Mukundi’s involvement in the Gen-Z demonstrations earlier this year gave him firsthand experience with activism and its consequences. “It put me in hot water with local politicians, but it fueled my interest in political matters,” he said, hinting at future aspirations in this arena. Despite his reservations on some government projects, Mukundi admitted that President William Ruto is among his political favorites.
Life Beyond the Mic
When not on-air or emceeing, Mukundi enjoys soccer, karaoke, and catching up on *Hawaii Five-O*. He also cherishes time with his family, particularly his grandmother, whom he describes as his hero. "She raised me, and she’s the person I admire most,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Mukundi advised younger listeners to “believe in God, work hard, and embrace rejection as part of the path to success.”
