Aftermath of Chuka University demonstrations

by Sharon Gatebi

On Monday, 25th October 2024, students from Chuka University held a demonstration protesting reckless driving along the Meru-Nairobi highway. The strike was organized after a recent accident on Saturday, 26th October 2024, involving a Toyota Fielder and a Toyota Probox. One student, Felistus Wambui, succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital, while another sustained severe injuries. Her tragic death sparked the protest.

The demonstration resulted in property destruction and business closures, leading to significant losses for local business owners. Among the affected businesses was Space Q, where students reportedly broke in, stealing a sound system, television, drinks, and even pre-prepared food items. Additionally, several kiosks were vandalized, some set ablaze. Students also burned tires, blocking the highway, and forcing drivers to seek alternative routes.

The university administration has since promised to compensate Space Q for its losses. The protest concluded around 3 PM after the Chuka University Students Association (CUSA) issued a memo urging students to call off the demonstration.
