Chuka University: From Prophecy to Reality

For incoming first-year students, the story of Chuka University is not just one of academic achievement but also of prophetic vision and community spirit. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Kenya in Tharaka Nithi County, the university's journey from a simple educational complex to a renowned institution of higher learning is both inspiring and ambitious.

The Prophetic Beginning

The establishment of Chuka University was foretold as early as 1951 by Jerusha Kanyua, a respected philanthropist and seer. She envisioned an "academic mountain" sprouting at Ndagani, advising the youth to wield pens as spears and books as shields—a metaphor for the power of education. This prophecy laid the spiritual foundation for what would become a cornerstone of higher learning in Kenya.

From Vision to Reality: The Early Years

In 2004, the dream began to take shape when Egerton University initiated plans to establish a campus in the eastern part of the country. Prof. Erastus Njoka, chairing a technical committee, recommended Chuka as the ideal location due to its central position. This decision was ratified by the Egerton University Council on September 17, 2004.

By 2005, Egerton University had renovated existing structures at Ndagani, leading to the official opening of the Egerton University Eastern Campus College (EUECC) on August 1, 2005. Prof. Njoka was appointed as the Director of the new campus, marking the beginning of Chuka University College.

The local community's contribution was instrumental in this development, as they donated 550 acres of land and other essential facilities, including those of the former Chuka Polytechnic, founded in 1956. This generosity ensured the rapid growth of the campus, which was eventually elevated to a constituent college of Egerton University in 2007 and renamed Chuka University College.

Becoming a Full-Fledged University

The Commission for Higher Education's (now Commission for University Education) evaluation in 2006 recommended the elevation of the college to university status. On January 8, 2013, the government granted Chuka University College a full charter, officially making it Chuka University. This historic moment positioned Chuka as the second public university to be chartered in Kenya and the ninth overall, joining the ranks of prestigious institutions like the University of Nairobi and Moi University.

Today, Chuka University serves over 15,000 students, offering a wide range of programs from certificates to PhDs. The university is renowned for its serene environment, ideal for academic pursuit, located away from the distractions of urban life.
