Earlier this week on Tuesday 7th of October, Chuka University held a welcoming ceremony to celebrate John Tingoi is the second runners up in the International Quant Championship 2025.

Tingoi 22 years-old, is a fourth-student pursuing Applied Computer Science, beat over 9,000 participants in Kenya to represent the country in the global competition designed to test skills in finance, statistics, and programming. Tingoi is making headlines for standing out not just locally but also regionally and globally.

The International Quant Championships is held annually and it brings innovators from all over the world. World Quant BRAIN’s 2025 International Quant Championship was held in Singapore this year.


WorldQuant, a global quantitative asset management firm, kicked off the fifth International Quant Championship (IQC) is a three-stage, team-based competition engaging students and early career professionals from around the globe. The team competitions run from March to September. Stage one which is the qualifiers' round, stage two is the national/regional round and lastly the global finals


Participants will have the chance to compete against some of the brightest minds in finance, mathematics and technology while applying their quantitative skills at the intersection of data science and financial markets according to Business Wire website.

More 98,000 contestants from over 5,000 universities across 110+ countries and regions have competed for the title of Champion since its introduction. Prior IQC winners have represented locations such as Taiwan, Canada, the UK and India.



WorldQuant 2025 winner countries were South Korea, India, Kenya and Taiwan respectively. Thanks to Tingoi Kenya had a place in the fifth annual competition, and also the only African country in the winning category.


This year’s championships were the largest ever hosted by World Quant with nearly 80,000 participants further proving Tingoi’s brilliance. Tingoni was alone while it's allowed to have 4 team members and this is what makes Tingoi exceptional


IQC championships and firm was founded in 2007 by Igor Tulchinsky, with the belief that talent is global, but opportunity is not, WorldQuant has more than 1,000 employees spread among 27 global offices, according to Business Wire’s website.


“Alpha is an algorithm that can be used to predict the future price of financial markets. It's basically about building signals that can be used to trade in the financial markets,” he told NTV.

Chuka University in statement to The Star, said Tungoi's participation and success in departmental hackathons and innovation challenges including those run in partnership with Teach2Give, TheJitu, and HealthIT sharpened his problem-solving mindset and prepared him for international excellence.


John Tingoi from his humble beginnings in a Maasai rural community his name hails across the world thanks to his, determination, resilience, and brilliance to achieve global recognition.

His journey shows that background does not define destiny and that all dreams are valid.


“Singapore is a great developed country and I wish more Kenyans would have a chance and visit the country. I will stay humble and through my story I hope to inspire more people. Never listen to anybody who says your background defines you, what defines you is your determination and the ideas that you have,” Tingoi told the Chuka Campus Review.


The Vice Chancellor praised John Tingoi as Chuka excellence for his global win, and making headlines nationally and globally. The Dean of students Dr Benjamin Kanga, CUSA members and Chuka University students gave John Tingoi his flowers and celebrated the Maasai born son.
