Dangling Shoes on Power Lines: what does they signify?

By Harun Mugambi

In the bustling streets, and slums of Nairobi and other major towns in Kenya, a peculiar sight often greets the upward gaze - pairs of shoes, laces tied together, dangling from power lines.

This phenomenon, as ubiquitous as it is mysterious, has sparked numerous theories and much speculation. This article aims to unravel the mystery behind this trend.

Theories Abound

The reasons behind this practice, colloquially known as 'shoefiti', are as varied as this depends on the locations where they are found. Some theories suggest that shoes on power lines may serve a celebratory purpose, such as marking the end of a military post or symbolizing a rite of passage. Others propose more ominous explanations, such as marking gang territories or indicating locations for drug transactions.

Gang Territories and Drug Peddling

One of the most commonly believed reasons why shoes hang over power lines in Kenya is to signal the location of a gang's controlled territory or a place where drug dealing is prime. These spots serve as both meeting points and hangout joints for gang members.

A Tribute to the "Fallen Soldiers"

In some cases, the shoes might signify that a gang member has been killed. The gang members toss the deceased shoes on the power lines as a form of symbolism. This practice serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of gang life and the tragic consequences it can lead to.

Symbol of Reformation

However, the shoes could also signify positive change. In the case of a criminal who has reformed, the hanging of the shoes is an attestation of his/her changed ways and acceptance as a member of society.

A Form of Personal Expression

A section of Kenyan youths have given their opinion on this practice, majorly noting that the shoes help them remember their past life and play a part in the decisions they make.

The Verdict

Despite the numerous theories, there's no definitive answer as to why those shoes hang from telephone or electric wires. Whether it's a form of personal expression, a sign of gang territory, or a marker for illicit activities, the shoes on the power lines continue to be a global enigma, sparking curiosity in the minds of onlookers everywhere.
