In recent times, the malfunctioning elevators within various buildings of Chuka University have transformed the simple act of moving between floors into a prolonged ordeal for students.
These dysfunctional lifts have been a source of frustration for approximately two semesters, and as a result, students have been forced to navigate the outdated and overcrowded stairways.
Students at the university have expressed their discontent with the situation, particularly in buildings like the Business School where the elevators are frequently out of service. This has left students with no choice but to rely on the traditional stairwell method, regardless of whether they are in a hurry or not.
Often, these staircases are congested with students going up and down, causing delays and making it challenging for those with classes on the upper floors.
The repercussions of this elevator dysfunctionality are not limited to the inconvenience of students. School cleaners have had to issue stern warnings to students, especially during their morning cleaning routines, leading to students starting their days on a sour note. One student remarked, "The elevator is a much simpler and more convenient option as it ensures we don't interfere with the cleaners on the stairs. There are also instances when students have empty stomachs and lack the energy to climb the stairs. We appeal to the school management to empathize with us and address our concerns by repairing the elevators."
In response to the ongoing frustration, Emmanuel Kogo, the Faculty Representative of Humanities and Social Sciences and a member of the Chuka University Student Association (CUSA), shed light on the situation. "The university's management is actively working on a solution, and we anticipate that the elevators will be back in operation by the end of this semester. This issue is currently under review, and all dysfunctional elevators across the campus will be repaired. Once this is resolved, we believe that everything will return to normal," assured the Faculty Representative.
While the dysfunctionality of elevators at Chuka University has been a persistent issue, students eagerly await the day when they can proudly proclaim that "Chuka University is a home away from home" with no reservations.
