Kenyan universities admit thousands of students each year, ushering them into a world of academic pursuit, newfound freedom, and vibrant social life.
Within these corridors and campus streets, friendships blossom, memories are made, and dynamics unfold, some playful, others complex. Among these, a recurring pattern emerges: certain male students find themselves entangled in roles that serve the social, academic, and financial needs of their female peers.
1. The Scholar
These are the academically gifted men who become lifelines for ladies seeking academic survival. Often targeted for their brilliance, they’re strategically placed in group assignments and study circles. In extreme cases, they’re coaxed into doing entire assignments or signing attendance sheets on behalf of their female friends. Blinded by charm or the hope of romantic attention, these scholars comply, while the ladies enjoy the perks of campus life with minimal academic strain.
2. The Escort
This category includes men who offer companionship and visibility. Ladies keen on appearing popular or socially active often enlist these escorts to accompany them across campus, carry their bags, or serve as unofficial photographers. Nicknamed “besties,” these men are seen as harmless, funny, and platonic. They’re the go-to partners for club nights, social events, and casual strolls, often used as bait to attract attention from other men, yet rarely part of the romantic equation themselves.
3. The “ATM”
For some ladies, campus life demands more than just books, it requires financial flair. Despite receiving upkeep from guardians or scholarships, many seek extra funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle. Enter the “ATM” guys: male students willing to spend generously on dates, gifts, and parties in hopes of winning affection. These men often expect something in return, viewing their spending as an investment. They easily replace escorts when money becomes the main attraction.
While many campus ladies proudly champion independence, social dynamics often tell a different story. Most fit into at least one, if not two or all three, of the roles described above.
So dear gents, before you dive headfirst into campus friendships, take a moment to reflect: are you the scholar, the escort, or the ATM? If you’re nodding in recognition, consider this your official invitation to the next Men's Conference.
