Isaac Mutuma New Meru County Governor, Kawira Mwangaza Out

Isaac Mutuma was sworn in as the 4th governor of Meru County at Mwendantu Grounds in Meru Town on March 14, 2025, following the impeachment of former governor Kawira Mwangaza. Despite having survived multiple impeachment attempts, Mwangaza was eventually removed after a ruling from Milimani Court, where Judge Bahati Mwemuye confirmed that the impeachment process by the Senate was legitimate. The court also affirmed that, under the Constitution, the Deputy Governor should take over the office following the impeachment.

Mwangaza had faced numerous challenges during her tenure, with the first impeachment motion brought forth by D.M.K. Kiogora, the MCA for Abogeta West. Kiogora accused Mwangaza of mismanaging the county and suggested that she should step down for rest.

However, this motion was rejected by the Senate. Mwangaza remained resolute, declaring she would serve as Meru’s governor for the next ten years. Efforts to unite county leaders, led by Meru Senator Kathiri Murunge, briefly showed promise before falling apart.

The second impeachment motion, led by Evans Mawira, also failed to gain traction in the Senate. However, the call for unity was revisited, with even Mawira joining efforts for reconciliation. Finally, a third impeachment motion, spearheaded by Zippora Kinya, successfully passed the Senate. Despite this victory, the court intervened, blocking Mwangaza’s removal from office, ultimately paving the way for Isaac Mutuma's swearing-in.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Isaac Mutuma called for forgiveness and unity among Meru County leaders. He vowed to restore peace, cohesion, and a fresh start for the county, aiming to bring back Meru's glory.
