In response to student protests following a fatal accident that claimed two Chuka University students, Chuka University Management held a consultative meeting with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Regional Office and the Chuka University Students Association on November 5, 2024, to address pedestrian and student safety along major roads near the university in Ndagani.
Following this, KeNHA has erected four bumps and three barricades at the university section of the road. They have also installed speed limit signs and constructed three zebra crossings. As a result, vehicle overspeeding has reduced. KeNHA has advised drivers not to overspeed near learning institutions.
This action comes after an accident along the highway, in which a Toyota Probox attempting to overtake a lorry collided head-on with a Toyota Fielder, seriously injuring two Chuka University students who, unfortunately, succumbed in the hospital.
Students from the university held a demonstration on Monday, October 28, 2024, protesting reckless driving along the highway, which they say is endangering their lives. In recent weeks, residents of the Ndagani area have witnessed multiple accidents along the Meru-Nairobi Highway.
