Hundreds of beauty pageants are held annually in different categories. Contestants embody warmth, care, responsibility, symbolize womanhood and empower other women positively.
Miss Universe is one of the most popular contests bringing over 90 countries on board. In Kenya, the pageant is replicated and conducted in the 47 counties. The event was first held in 2002, and is an annual contest to choosethe pageant's ambassador.
Edith Muthoni Muiti famously known as Edith Sonnie a teacher of English and literature was crowned Miss Universe Kenya, Tharaka Nithi County on 21st January, 2023 held at Africana Falls during the Tharaka Nithi Talent explore.
The mother of one, an eight year old son, studied at Kigane Primary school and Winners Academy in Primary and later went to St. Marys Girls High School in Igoji, Meru County. She pursued a degree in Education (English Literature) at Kenyatta University main campus.
Edith taught at ACK Makandune Secondary School in Tharaka Nithi before transferring to Kanjiunduthi Secondary in Meru County. She was crowned Miss Universe Tharaka Nithi while teaching in ACK Makandune Secondary School.
Edith says she realized she had a passion for modelling while in high school, however she did not participate in any modelling activities then. Her passion pushed her to have a zeal to watch beauty pageants conducted worldwide annually.”I enjoyed watching the creativity, confidence and fun the contestants displayed,” she said.
The beauty queen confessed that she had a sense of doubt whether she would one day hit the runway due to her height. Models are required to have a height of at least 5.7’ which she had not attained. However, she was able to overcome her main fear and emerged the star at Miss Universe Tharaka Nithi early this year.
It has not been easy to strike a balance between modelling and teaching. “My main challenge has been managing time, I have a way to balance between the two,”she said. Edith finds modelling of importance because it reveals her as a confident person and it has helped her gain skills such as dancing. Cat walking enables one to walk elegantly and shoulder high.
Moreover, she has been able to secure a partnership with Certified Homes under the patronage of Peter Nyaga. Events such as Tharaka Nithi Talent Explore and Enlightment Summit Young Men International season 1 and 2 have been held under her mentorship.
She is currently partnering with Elsa Talents run by Qs Batista, Kinyua John, Kenny Kaburu,Maureen Mbaabu and Wycliff Muthomi.
Edith has mentored the current Mr and Miss Climate Kenya, Michael Kyalo and Dorcas Naishorua Umaka respectively. The event took place at KICC , Nairobi on 28th April ,2023. In addition to that she is mentoring a group of young models among them Reysha Nkatha and Alvin Murithi ,Little Miss Universe Kenya and Little Mister Universe Kenya.
She is aspiring to start more events such as Young Mount Stars.”My long term goal is to build a talent school that will help people expose their talents fully in Kenya and the world at large,”she said.
