Chuka University students have been advised to exercise caution and stay safe after Ndagani experienced a surge in crime activities within the past weeks.
In a memo by Ibrahim Mulinge, the university Senior Security Officer addressed to staff and students, the institution brought to attention a recent increase in rape incidences in Ndagani and its environs, asking that they take proactive measures to protect themselves.
Sources privy to The Campus Review say a university student was recently raped and assaulted in her own house by unknown men. The victim narrated how the two young men forcefully entered her house and committed the horrific act on her while threatening her using a knife.
“In light of alarming incidents, we implore staff and students to be more vigilant, especially in the hostels and residential areas outside the university”, read the statement.
Students and staff have been asked to refrain from unnecessary outdoor activities during late hours, especially in poorly lit or secluded areas and travel in groups whenever possible. The memo has also advised on securing entry points to premises at night, to prevent any unauthorized access.
Student and staff have also been advised to be cautious about letting strangers into their living space and insists on visitor identity verification.
They have also been asked to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the University Security Office or Police and embrace Nyumba Kumi and Hostel Kumi security strategies.
“We encourage you to actively participate in the Nyumba Kumi and Hostel Kumi security strategies which promotes community safety and surveillance. Get to know your neighbours and establish a network of support”, read part of the statement.
What started as a mere occurrence among the residents of Ndagani, an area known for its serenity has now turned into a series of uncontrolled insecurity incidences as students and staff complain on the rise of insecurity in the area.
Recently, a business lady was almost robbed by two unknown men. The university student who sells thrift clothes at Ndagani market, narrated how the three young men arrived and pretended to show interest in her clothes before taking out a knife and telling her to give them every penny she had accumulated for the day.
Before that, a university student had just been mugged around Marine in Ndagani.
