Every Monday, Chuka University Student Association (CUSA) Speaker Tonney Ochieng, popularly known as Jakom, takes it upon himself to distribute condoms around Chuka University.
It is not an easy task for Jakom, but he ensures that over 15 condom dispensers across the institution are filled to the brim, a duty he says he is faithfully committed to as an elected student leader.
"I distribute around 10 boxes of condoms across the institution. Each box contains 144 condoms," Jakom says.
According to him, the condom distribution campaign is well received by students, noting that the dispensers are usually empty within two days of restocking.
"Every Monday I load the dispensers with condoms. I get positive reactions from students who are always happy with the program. The condoms barely last two days in those dispensers," he adds.
Jakom reveals that many students inquire about the availability of condoms, sometimes through WhatsApp or direct calls, which has prompted him to update his WhatsApp status whenever a distribution is made.
He says the inquiries motivate him to continue with the program.
"Many students just see you carrying the packets and start to ask questions. The WhatsApp status posts have also attracted many inquiries from students," he says.
Jakom commends students for the high uptake of condoms, saying the initiative has played a key role in preventing unwanted pregnancies and protecting comrades from sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
He adds that condoms are also available daily at the university dispensary.
