THE CBC EXPLAINER

By Eric Barasa

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, initiated in 2019, is a transformative approach to education. It shifts the focus from rote academic knowledge to the development of key competencies and skills in learners. This aligns with the evolving demands of the 21st century, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability.

The core competencies of CBC include:

- Communication and collaboration

- Critical thinking and problem-solving

- Creativity and imagination

- Citizenship

- Digital literacy

- Learning to learn

- Self-efficacy

These competencies are woven into various subjects and activities, ensuring a holistic education that transcends traditional academic boundaries.

CBC offers a broader range of subjects compared to the previous 8-4-4 system, encompassing:

- English

- Kiswahili

- Indigenous languages

- Mathematics

- Science and Technology

- Social Studies

- Religious Education (CRE/IRE/HRE)

- Art and Craft

- Music

- Physical and Health Education

- Agriculture

- Home Science, and more.

Moreover, CBC adopts a novel approach to assessments. Moving away from the exam-centric model, it emphasizes continuous assessment and competency-based evaluations, including:

- Formative assessments

- Performance tasks

- Portfolio assessments

- National assessments

In essence, CBC represents a paradigm shift in education, preparing learners to meet the challenges of the 21st century by fostering a deeper understanding of concepts, nurturing critical thinking, and promoting lifelong learning.
