The prestigious brand is owned by the Quandt family, with Stefan Quandt holding 23.6% of BMW's shares, while his sister, Susanne Klatten (formerly Walten), owns 19.1%. Susanne is considered the richest woman in Germany due to her significant stake in the company.
BMW's CEO
Oliver Zipse, a 60-year-old German, has been the CEO of BMW since August 16, 2019.
Under his leadership, BMW has greatly expanded its electric vehicle lineup, solidifying its presence in the sustainable automotive market. Additionally, Peter Van Binsbergen oversees BMW's operations in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Birth of BMW
BMW’s origins can be traced back to Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto, who initially founded the company as an aircraft engine manufacturer. Later, it was renamed to BMW, and in 1929, the company produced its first car, the BMW 3/15. This model had a top speed of 75 km/h and accelerated from 8 to 40 km/h in just 10 seconds, weighing in at 410 kg, making it an efficient vehicle for its time.
